What is Workers' Day?

Did you know that Workers' Day, also known as May Day, is a public holiday celebrated on 1st May in many countries – including Malta? This special day is all about recognising and honouring the contributions and achievements of workers and labour unions. It's a day to remember the struggles and successes of the labour movement and to celebrate workers' rights.

The labour movement in the late 19th century fought for better working conditions, fair wages, and the right to organise, and May Day has its roots in this movement. Today, Workers' Day is all about celebrating workers' solidarity, collective bargaining power, and social justice.

In Malta, Workers' Day is celebrated with parades, speeches, and other public events that recognise the importance of workers' contributions to society. It's a chance to reflect on how far we've come and the challenges that still exist, such as low wages, job insecurity, and unsafe working conditions.
